NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 18 – M-Pesa is set to introduce a tap-to-pay card payment option in partnership with Visa.
The expected rollout comes after Safaricom met Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) compliance, a form of security for firms that accept, transmit, and store credit card information and transactions.
It will enable more than 60 million customers, 5 million businesses, and 100,000 developers to receive mobile payments, online payments, and in-person card payments globally.
“In line with our purpose of transforming lives, we are innovating our payment solutions to provide customers and businesses with more options and additional convenience,” the telco announced.
Tourists with Visa cards will also be able to pair their cards with M-Pesa in the eight markets where it currently exists.
“FinTechs and financial institutions are equally set to leverage our card processing capabilities empowering them to provide end-to-end mobile and card payment solutions.”
Now, Visa and M-Pesa offer virtual payment cards to more than 60 million customers and 925,000 merchants.
