NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 8 – For a woman juggling between career and family, it is always a tumultuous task and yet many have gone against the odds to overcome the barrier and shine in both spheres.
Such include Catherine Karimi, the Chief Executive Officer of APA Life Insurance. We caught up with the CEO on International Women’s Day, to talk about her career journey, work-life balance, and thriving in a male-dominated industry.
A trained teacher by professional, Karimi says she ended up in the world of insurance, mainly because she was looking for a field where she could use her love for mathematics on a daily basis.
Since joining APA Insurance, in early 2017, Karimi has had a stellar career and recently won the CEO of the year by Think Business Insurance Awards 2020, a first for women in the insurance sector.
Before joining the firm, Karimi worked for several insurance companies under different capacities among them Acting Managing Director of Kenya Alliance Insurance Company.
Away from the boardroom, Karimi says she is raising a family; has a wonderful husband and young adults, including teenagers.
Karimi reveals that her key to excelling in life has been balancing; “When it is time for my family, it is strictly time for my family, when it is about work, I stay dedicated to working.”
