Farmers in Mt. Kenya to miss an annual field training due to COVID-19

NYERI, Kenya, Jul 23 – Thousands of farmers from Mt. Kenya region who depend on the annual farmers field training held at the Wambugu Farmers Training Centre in Nyeri county will miss this year event due to covid-19 restrictions, which include a ban on social gatherings.

This is after the training, which has been held for the last eighteen years, was cancelled with the organiser instead opting to hold a virtual training through media outlets and social media.

Wambugu Farmers Training Centre Principal David Kariuki says each year, more than twenty-eight-thousands farmers meet with exhibitors where they learn new farming technology and buy farm inputs worth millions of shillings.

Kariuki ensured farmers that the virtual training will be conducted smoothly, to ensure that all farmers benefit.

“It’s unfortunate that we will not hold this year event where farmers interact one on one with trainers from companies however those that are online will be able to catch training from twenty exibitors virtually and on social media this is due to covid-19 restrictions” said Kariuki.

Farmers from the region each year troop to the centre to learn new farming technologies from seed manufacturing companies.
