Kenya raises Sh400m for blue economy conference two months to global meeting

Kamau says the conference had secured Sh200 million from Canada but needs more support both cash and in-kind

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 10 – Kenya has raised Sh400 million to host the blue economy conference scheduled for November this year in Nairobi.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Ambassador Macharia Kamau says the country had budgeted Sh800 million and is confident the remaining amount will be raised without putting any burden on the exchequer directly.

The three-day high-level conference will focus on new technologies and innovation for oceans, seas, lakes and rivers as well as challenges, potential opportunities, priorities and partnerships.

Kamau says the conference had secured Sh200 million from Canada but needs more support both cash and in-kind

“Our economy has always been based on land. Hence, issues such as plots, land ownership have been the main drivers of our economy. But we have come to the realization that if you look at the history of development in the world, most of the economies that tend to do well have tapped into their oceans, lakes and rivers,” said Kamau.

“We think that the time has come for countries such as Kenya to tap into that sector.”

Kenya will host delegates from 193 countries with attendees expected to include governors and city mayors.

It will also include experts and participants from UN and regional bodies, academic and scientific organizations, civil societies, the business and private sectors to discuss an economy concept powered largely by oceanic and marine resources.

“We are expecting people from all spheres, be it conservationists or people who are into manufacturing and production, everyone is invited,” Kamau added.
