Norfund – the Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries – is owned by the Norwegian Government and serves as an instrument in Norwegian development policy. Norfund invests in the establishment and development of profitable and sustainable enterprises in developing countries. The aim is to contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction. Norfund always invests with partners, Norwegian or foreign, focusing on clean energy, financial institutions and agribusiness. The main regions are Eastern and Southern Africa with offices located in Johannesburg, Nairobi and Maputo. Additionally, Norfund invests in selected countries in Asia and Central America with regional offices in San José and Bangkok. In 2014, Norfund committed investments for NOK 3.6 billion. The current portfolio amounts to NOK 12.8 billion, invested in 130 different companies. The number of employees is about 70.

Investment Director – Financial Institutions
Nairobi

Financial Institutions constitute Norfund’s second largest investment sector and invest equity/loans in different providers of financial services. Financial Institutions operate in a growing sector in selected areas in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Central America. We are looking for an Investment Director for our Nairobi Office.

The successful candidates must have experience from banking, finance or accounting and hold the requisite qualifications. The person employed will be reporting to the Head of Department, Financial Institutions.

Scope of work:
Norfund seeks to appoint an Investment Director, based in Nairobi, who will be responsible for the growth and performance of Norfund’s East Africa Investment Portfolio, focusing specifically on investments in financial institutions. This includes business development and relationship management with financial institutions and banks in the African region as well as portfolio management.  The Investment Director’s responsibility is appraisal of investment proposals, with emphasis on profitability, Valuation, risks and risk mitigation, and follow up and troubleshooting in challenging investments. Travel into Africa and Norway and board representation will also be required.

Specific qualifications for this position:

  • Master’s degree in finance or similar
  • Minimum 10 years’ senior investment experience with at least 3 years’ banking/financial institutions experience
  • Senior Operational Management and documented leadership experience.
  • Result oriented, and capacity to work independently, lead processes on your own and be a resource for others in the department through challenging decision-making processes.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
  • Structured and efficient work style.
  • Strong analytical skills and result oriented.
