NAIROBI, Kenya Nov 4 – Police will start implementing tough traffic rules, mainly targeting public service vehicles from Monday, as part of measures to curb road carnage.
The rules commonly known as Michuki rules, first introduced by former Transport Minister, the late John Michuki, had been abandoned or failed to be enforced fully, leading to increased number of road accidents that have claimed many lives across the country.
Following the warning, operators in the public transport sector have protested that the enforcement may not achieve results, unless proper frameworks are set out, even though they did not elaborate.
But Cabinet Secretaries for Interior and Transport Fred Matiangi and James Macharia, have lately warned that the new rules must be adhered to from Monday.
Among the requirements is for all public service vehicles to be fitted with speed governors, safety belts and a yellow continuous line for easy identification.
“Therefore, effective Monday,12 November 2018, any PSV vehicle ,drivers ,SACCOs/Transport companies, passengers and other relevant parties that fail to comply with the provisions of the NTSA Act and the Traffic Act will be firmly dealt with the law,” a statement from the Transport Ministry stated.
Public Service Vehicle drivers and conductors are also required to always wear uniforms and prominently display their badges with photos as prescribed the law.
The two cabinet Secretaries stated that a series of accidents witnessed on the roads have been attributed to lack of observance of the laws governing traffic management.
