The fire broke out on the second floor of Elite Arcade damaging clothing stalls and other businesses there.
Several people, including those who tried to flee through windows were evacuated and no major injuries were reported.
Workers at some of the stalls adjacent to a small food restaurant where the fire originated told Capital FM News that a gas cylinder that was defectively connected caused the fire.
“The waiter of the small restaurant had just brought in a gas cylinder but did not fit in well because he was called by another person who wanted to be assisted in carrying some goods,” one of the electricians in the building said.
Another said: “I was in my stall when I heard a loud bang… we run for our safety since the fire was already extending to our stalls.”
The building houses Cooperative Bank on the ground floor and City Star Restaurant on the first floor.
Police were at the scene conducting a probe into the cause of the fire which left property of unknown value destroyed.
Elias Okoth lost all his clothing materials but says, “I thank God I was not hurt. I however don’t know where to start…I have lost a lot of materials.”
Despite the loss, Okoth applauded Nairobi County fire-fighters for their quick response since “the fire could have extended to other parts of the building.”
