NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 8 – Turkana County Senator John Munyes who was accidentally shot by his bodyguard on Sunday evening has been flown to Nairobi for specialised treatment.

Munyes was airlifted to the Nairobi Hospital from Lodwar District Hospital where he had earlier been admitted.

Tongaren Member of Parliament Eseli Simiyu says the Turkana Senator was accidentally shot by his bodyguard as they were returning from a peace mission in Kibis, Lodwar.

“If you are in that high insecurity area your guns should be ready anytime. So the safety was off and in the process it accidentally went off. In fact, it went off not pointed at Munyes but it hit a metal object and ricocheted from there and hit him… it was a pure accident!” he said.

“The bodyguard felt so bad, he was in such a state he almost killed himself… he had to be restrained. He feels remorseful enough and it was accidental clearly.”

Simiyu says Munyes was in a stable condition and was to undergo surgery later on Monday to remove the bullet lodged in his leg.

CORD leader Raila Odinga was among leaders who visited the hospital.

“We have been able to talk to him, he is now conscious. We have also talked to the doctors who told us he was stable throughout the night and is now mobile,” he said.
