NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 13 – More than 200 people are expected to appear in court on Monday following the ongoing crackdown in Nairobi.

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo says among those due in court are Kenyan citizens and aliens.

“As from yesterday I think we are able to screen more than 200 people and majority of them were Kenyans… some of them were aliens and therefore a number of them will be arraigned in courts and others will be joining the refugee camps. The United Nations High Commission on Refugee (UNHCR) will be working closely with us to ensure that those who left the camps without authority go back,” said the IG.

He explained the Kenyans netted during the swoop had failed to obtain national cards as required under the law. A Kenyan after attaining the age of 18 years is required to obtain a national ID card.

Kimaiyo assured Kenyans that the screening operation shall be continuous, spreading across the country in a bid to ensure the security of the nation.

The IG defended the process as necessary and vital to national security, sounding a warning to criminal elements that their days are numbered.

The government has so far deported 82 Somali nationals to Mogadishu in the ongoing security operation on illegal immigrants.

The operation against aliens was prompted by a spate of terrorist activities in the country, particularly in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area and Mombasa.

The operation has seen those in possession of legal identification and legitimate papers to be in Kenya released, while those found without genuine ones have been deported.

Kimaiyo insists that the police are conducting themselves professionally in screening those detained at the Safaricom Kasarani Stadium.

“I have not received any complaint of harassment… no one has complained about sexual harassment and so forth,” He added. “If there is any that has been reported to the media houses or to any other authorities, please come forward.

“We shall take a very serious action against anyone found committing that of a thing, because our law is very clear, it’s not selective. We’ll enforce the law to the letter the way it is required of us”

The police chief was speaking after being installed as the Africa Inland Church – Milimani Chairman, a post that was formerly held by General (Rtd) Lazaro Sumbeiywo, who stepped down after 20 years.
