NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 30 – An angry mob torched a car to a shell on Mbagathi Way that had knocked down and killed a pedestrian who was crossing the road on Sunday.

Speaking to Capital FM News one of the witnesses said the car was making its way to the City Mortuary roundabout when it knocked down the pedestrian and the driver chose to stop when he was accosted by an angry mob that later torched the car.

“I am a resident of Mbagathi. I was walking home this morning… it was about 9.30am then all of a sudden I had a loud bang! When I turned I saw a guy flying in the air, the guy died on the spot,” the witness who only identified himself as Nelson said.

“Thereafter the driver stopped, but already a mob had gathered and began to stone the car and they torched it; the driver ran away,” he said.

Kilimani police chief Peter Katam told Capital FM News the driver managed to escape unhurt and is now in custody at the Kilimani Police Station.

“The police came in time and contained the situation. They have removed the body from the scene,” he said.

Katam said that they are looking for the people who burnt the car and will charge them in court, as he urged the public not to be so quick to take the law into their own hands.

“We are also asking the public to use the flyover on the Mbagathi Way as it’s safer,” he said.
