Kalonzo: I have no deal with ODM

Musyoka said the Wiper Party national executive council has not met to discuss on pre-election issues as claimed by the media/VPPS

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 1 – Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has dismissed media reports that the Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) party had come up with a draft coalition document to form an alliance with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ahead of the December 4 deadline.

Musyoka said the Wiper Party national executive council has not met to discuss on pre-election issues as claimed by the media.

“For anybody to suggest that I Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka can be somebody’s deputy is misleading the Kenyan population. I am saying it cannot happen but surely it does not happen,’’ Musyoka said.

“What I read in sections of the media are not accurate because our party’s national executive council has not met to discuss on such a document and I wonder which part of the world we are in when we read such statements,’’ added Musyoka.

Speaking at Afraha stadium in Nakuru town during this year’s World Aids Day, the Vice President however said that his party was ready to engage in talks with political parties.

“The Wiper party national executive council has not met to discuss on any document as claimed by the media. But this does not mean that we cannot talk to each other as Kenyans,’’ Musyoka.

He told the meeting which was attended by Cabinet Minister Esther Murugi, assistant minister Lee Kinyanjui and PS Andrew Mondoh among others that the December 4 has created a lot of anxiety among the people of Kenya as if things will be coming to a standstill, noting that life will move on after that date and even after the March 4, 2013.

Musyoka said he will name his running mate on January 4 next year which will be the deadline according to the law.

He said the country needs salvation from its leaders, saying it is time Kenyans fight against tribalism.

“We should not auction our communities but talk as people of one country called Kenya if we are to remain as united people of one nation,’’ he said.

The Vice President said smaller parties can merge to form a strong coalition which can accommodate all the Kenyan communities for the sake of peace and stability.

He said Kenyans should elect leaders irrespective of tribal and political affiliations.

On the HIV/Aids scourge, the Vice President hailed the move by the ministry of Special Programmes and National Aids Control Council to establish an HIV Equity Tribunal in Kenya- the first of its kind globally, which has been cited as the best example throughout the world.

“This tribunal represents a bold step towards achieving the goal of eliminating stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV by promoting laws and policies that advanced human rights and fundamental freedoms,’’ he said.

He called on members of the public to make use of the tribunal to ensure that their rights are not violated because of their HIV positive status.

The Vice President reiterated the Governments commitment to provide leadership by mobilizing available resources and strategic direction to guide national response to mitigate this problem.

Ms Murugi expressed concern that the total number of HIV cases in Kenya has increased from 1.4 million in 2007 to the current estimated 1.6million people.

She said the success of the HIV and AIDS control programme in the country is attributed to political commitment marked by the increased financial resource in the HIV/AIDS programme with the government channelling over Sh3 billion directly to communities in research institutions to fight the epidemic.
