Ocampo is expected to head the new FIFA ethics committee investigations arm/FILE
Addressing a press conference at The Hague on Tuesday, Ocampo said he leaves the court with the hope that victims of the post-election violence in Kenya will get justice.
“I would like to personally say goodbye to the Kenyan people. I am leaving as the prosecutor tomorrow. It was an honour and privilege to work for you, justice will not go away, the new prosecutor will conduct the trial,” he said.
Ocampo who served as the first prosecutor of the ICC for nine years said he was honoured to have been at the service of the victims.
He also urged Kenyans to ensure elections are held peacefully to avoid a repeat of the 2008 post-election violence that resulted in Kenya being a subject of the international court.
Ocampo who has been a controversial subject in Kenya since he started investigations in 2009, said by holding peaceful elections, Kenya will be a good example to the rest of the countries in the African continent.
He explained the role of the ICC was to ensure victims access justice, perpetrators are punished for their acts and that Kenya refrains from violence in future.
Ocampo said it was up to Kenyans to conduct their elections and vote for their preferred candidates and distanced the court from the elections.
“Elections will come. Kenyans have to understand this is Kenyan business. No international server can define elections in Kenya. The Kenyan case is an important one… I hope we will allow peaceful elections. It is also an example for the whole region,” he said.
Ocampo has been seen as the face of the Kenyan ICC cases since the investigations started.
Last month it was reported on BBC Sport that the outgoing prosecutor will head the new FIFA ethics committee investigations arm.
He was expected to respond to the appointment this month.
At FIFA, he will investigate corruption allegations and breaches of ethics rules.
Meanwhile, incoming ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda will be sworn into office on Friday at The Hague based court.
She was elected ICC prosecutor by the Assembly of States last December.
She will be the second prosecutor to serve the court for nine years after the exit of Ocampo.
The swearing in ceremony will be streamed live from the ICC.
