Turmeric in skin care

I’m sure this is not the first time you’ve heard of reaching into your pantry for your weekly dose of skin and hair treatments and I’m pretty certain it won’t be your last.

Chances are, if you’re reading this you’ve probably experimented with avocado and egg hair masks, lip sugar scrubs or yoghurt face masks. But have you dabbled with turmeric before? No? Well that will change after reading this!

Popularly used in Indian cuisine, this spice has been known to help with various skin problems for centuries.

Here are some of our favourite ways to use turmeric to help tackle different skin problems:

  1. Even skin tone: When mixed with lemon juice, turmeric can help reduce the dark spots and give your face a nice, even skin tone. It’s also great if you want to reduce the appearance of stretchmarks so get mixing!
  2. Face masks: This spice is great if you’ve got oily skin. Mix 1.5 tablespoons of sandalwood powder with a pinch of ground turmeric and 2 tablespoons of lemon or orange juice. Leave the mask for about 7-10 minutes and voila. You’re welcome.
  3. Ageing and wrinkles: It’s a fantastic exfoliating agent that can help reverse signs of ageing or wrinkles. Just mix it with some milk or honey and very gently scrub in circular motions. Be careful not to stress your eye area though.
  4. Sooth burns: This wonder spice can also help give relief if you’re suffering from minor burns due to its antiseptic properties. Use it together with aloe vera gel and a drop of tea tree oil and you’ll be fine in no time.
