P-Unit’s Boneye to work on SHUGA title track

Kenyan musician Bon’eye from P-Unit is one of four musicians commissioned to write and perform the title track for the second edition of MTV drama series Shuga: Love, Sex, Money.

Bon’eye will team up with Nigerians Banky W and WizKid, and South African rapper L-Tido to do the track and video which will be shot in Kenya and directed by Clarence Peters.

Clarence was in Kenya just a few months ago to shoot Camp Mulla’s “Party Don’t Stop”. The stars are expected to start shooting at the end of the week, ahead of the exclusive launch of the new drama series on February 10.

The track “Shuga” will be a mash up of Afro-Hip Hop-R&B-Soul-Pop and commissioned by MTV Networks Africa to spread the message about responsible sexual behaviour and tolerance, according to a statement from MTV.

Although the four artists will be the main authors of the track, it will feature a collage of mainly Kenyan and Nigerian artists namely Camp Mulla, Wyre, STL, Madtraxx, Flavour, P-Square, J Martins and Sasha among others.

The statement added that the song will debut on MTV Base (Channel 322) on Tuesday, February 14, and will also be available for free download on the Shuga website.

The cast in this second installment include Sharon Olago, David Omwange, Nick Mutuma, Anthony Mwangi and Valerie Kimani who were on the first run of the series.

New faces however are singer Avril, former radio presenter Nick Ndeda, Nancy Wanjiku, Edward Nyanaro and others.

The second edition was co-directed by actress Lupita Nyongo working alongside Teboho Mahlatsi. It is promised to be more provocative and will tackle issues that weren’t addressed in the first issue, such as homosexuality and rape.
