Government disburses over Sh214mn Inua Jamii cash in Vihiga

VIHIGA, Kenya, Jan 27 – The national government has disbursed over Sh214 million Inua Jamii funds to Vihiga residents.

The social welfare programme that was released this month benefitted 26,800 people.

Out of this, 20,000 were older people, 6,000 orphans and vulnerable children while 800 were persons living with disabilities.

The County Deputy Director for Social Services Joseph Abamo said each beneficiary received Sh8,000 being a-four-month cumulative amount for the Sh2,000 monthly stipend.

Abamo said they intend to enroll more people into the programme subject to availability of funds so that the underprivileged in the society are also able to meet their basic needs.

He added that the initiative has uplifted the lives of the targeted groups as through follow-up, they have seen some use the money to buy dairy cattle as an investment for a sustained source of income.

He disclosed that the poverty level in the county stands at 62 per cent while dependence ratio is 100:90 where 87.2 percent of the population engage in agriculture, mainly crop farming.
