NAIROBI, Kenya, May 25 – Car & General has partnered with Boda Girls Kenya to support women riders and improve healthcare access in rural communities through a new motorcycle donation programme.
The partnership, launched in Ahero, Kisumu County, will see Car & General donate 32 TVS HLX 125 motorcycles in the first phase of the initiative, alongside rider training, helmets and protective gear compliant with National Transport and Safety Authority regulations.
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with TVS Motor Company.
Boda Girls Kenya trains and supports female motorcycle riders to provide safe and harassment-free transport services for women, while also facilitating access to healthcare services including maternal health, family planning, cervical cancer screening and gender-based violence support.
The organisation currently operates across Kisumu, Homa Bay and Siaya counties, with a network of more than 160 women riders serving underserved rural communities.
Speaking during the launch, George Rubiri said the partnership goes beyond transport solutions.
“At Car & General, we are committed to making a positive impact in every community we serve. This partnership with Boda Girls Kenya is about more than mobility—it is about dignity, safety, and saving lives,” he said.
Nancy Akeyo described the collaboration as a major boost to the organisation’s outreach efforts.
“This support strengthens our mission to provide safe transport and healthcare access for women in rural Kenya. These motorcycles will directly expand our reach, helping more women access life-saving services while creating sustainable livelihoods for our riders,” she said.
According to UNICEF estimates cited during the event, Kenya records more than 5,000 maternal deaths and 35,000 infant deaths annually, with poor transport access remaining a major barrier to healthcare in rural areas. Organisers also noted that concerns over harassment by male boda boda riders continue to discourage some women from seeking essential health services.
The donated TVS HLX 125 motorcycles were selected for their durability, fuel efficiency and suitability for rough rural terrain, making them appropriate for healthcare outreach and community mobility services.
The initiative comes as Car & General marks 90 years of operations in East Africa, where the company distributes mobility, agriculture, power and construction solutions across the region.
