NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 13 – The Commission on Administrative Justice has secured Sh508,914 for a lecturer at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), ending an eight-year dispute over unpaid dues.
The lecturer, identified as Mr. A.O., lodged a complaint with the Commission after repeated follow-ups with the university’s finance department failed to yield payment or formal communication.
He told the Commission that despite teaching at the institution for eight years, his outstanding payments had not been settled.
He had also requested that the unpaid amount be converted into tuition fees for his dependents studying at the university, but the request was declined.
In his complaint, he cited frustration over the prolonged delay, particularly during a period when his parents were unwell and following the death of his mother.
After receiving the complaint, the Commission wrote to JKUAT’s Vice-Chancellor seeking clarification. The initial inquiry went unanswered, prompting two reminder letters from the Ombudsman before a response was received.
The university later confirmed that the payment had been processed.
“A sum of KSh 508,914 has been disbursed to Mr. A.O. as part-time payment, constituting full settlement of the outstanding dues owed to him,” JKUAT said in its response.
The Commission said the case highlights its role in addressing maladministration and ensuring accountability in public institutions, especially in cases involving delayed payments and administrative inaction.
