Motivair unveils 2.5MW cooling unit for AI data centres

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 21 – Motivair by Schneider Electric has launched a new high-capacity coolant distribution unit (CDU) designed to support next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) data centres with cooling requirements that can scale beyond 10 megawatts.

The new MCDU-70 unit, unveiled on Tuesday, has a capacity of 2.5MW, making it the highest-capacity CDU in Motivair’s portfolio. The system is intended for high-density computing environments such as AI factories and advanced graphics processing unit (GPU) deployments.

According to the company, AI-focused data centres generate between 20 and 50 times more heat than traditional CPU-based facilities, driving demand for liquid cooling as rack power densities approach 1MW and above.

Motivair said multiple MCDU-70 units can be deployed as a centralised system using Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure software, allowing operators to scale cooling capacity to 10MW and beyond for large AI and high-performance computing workloads.

The company said the new CDU is designed to support emerging GPU roadmaps and large-scale deployments, including facilities targeting gigawatt-scale capacity. Individual units can be configured in redundant arrangements to improve reliability in mission-critical environments.

The launch expands Schneider Electric’s liquid cooling portfolio, which now includes CDUs ranging from 105kW to 2.5MW. The systems are manufactured in North America, Europe, and Asia and are intended for global deployment.

Motivair said the units are tested under full-load conditions before deployment and are designed to integrate with broader data centre infrastructure for monitoring and control.

The company said demand for scalable liquid cooling is increasing as data centre operators adapt infrastructure to support AI-driven workloads and accelerated computing.
