NAIROBI, Kenya, July 11 – Over 800,000 Kenyans have signed up on the Boma Yangu portal to benefit from the government’s Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), reflecting growing interest in homeownership and confidence in the state’s housing agenda.
Speaking during a Diaspora Stakeholder Meeting in Nairobi, Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Charles Hinga underscored the program’s transformative impact, urging Kenyans to register for homeownership.
“It is not just about housing; it is about building dignity, providing opportunities, and enhancing national development. I call upon Kenyans to take up this initiative towards owning a decent, affordable home through the Boma Yangu platform,” said Hinga.
The surge in registrations comes as construction of over 140,000 housing units gains momentum across 44 counties.
Launched to bridge the housing gap and promote dignified living, Boma Yangu allows citizens to register, select housing units, and save towards ownership.
Data from the Affordable Housing Board (AHB) shows that more than 3,100 homes have already been completed, with an additional 11,000 units nearing handover.
Beyond housing, the AHP has spurred economic activity across various sectors, where the initiative has created over 250,000 jobs in both formal and informal industries.
A key component includes Sh 11 billion allocated to support MSMEs and Jua Kali artisans involved in the supply and construction value chains.
To cater to specific groups, the government has also initiated the construction of 42,000 housing units for uniformed personnel, including members of the police, military, and prison services.
Additionally, a plan to develop 177,000 student housing units is in the procurement phase, aiming to ease accommodation pressure in institutions of higher learning.
As the Affordable Housing Programme scales up, the government is ramping up public awareness, calling on more Kenyans to register and take advantage of the opportunity to own a decent, affordable home that could redefine urban living across the country.
