NAIROBI, Kenya, June 17 – Power Learn Project (PLP), in partnership with Safaricom Hook, has graduated 300 youth from its 16-week software development program, as the two organisations push for wider industry uptake of Kenya’s growing pool of digital talent.
The training, launched in October 2024, targeted youth from all 47 counties, offering coding skills, mentorship, and hands-on project experience as part of PLP’s wider goal to train one million developers across Africa under its 1MillionDevs4Africa campaign.
“This is more than a graduation—it’s a return on national investment,” said PLP Executive Director Mumbi Ndung’u. “We envision a future where every young African can access digital skills, dignified livelihoods, and the ability to innovate from anywhere.”
Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer, Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, echoed the importance of such initiatives in building Kenya’s innovation pipeline. “We’re nurturing thinkers, builders, and creators who will solve challenges on both national and global levels.”
To support graduates’ transition into the workforce, PLP has launched a Talent Hub to connect them with job placements, internships, freelance opportunities, and entrepreneurship support. The organisation is now calling on corporates, startups, development partners, and government agencies to actively engage and absorb the trained talent.
“Africa doesn’t have a talent problem—it has a deployment problem,” Ndung’u said. “We need alignment between education and industry to ensure this pipeline is not wasted.”
Applications for the June 2025 training intake are currently open.
