Rhino Ark, Austrian firm unveil AI system to protect black rhinos in Aberdares

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar  26 – Rhino Ark, in collaboration with Austrian tech firm IT-Revolutions, has introduced an AI-powered system to enhance the management of the upcoming Black Rhino sanctuary in the Aberdares.

The AI-based hyena detection system will be deployed across six corridors linking the sanctuary to the rest of the Aberdare ecosystem.

The system, which is currently in the experimental phase, aims to prevent hyena intrusions, a major threat to Black Rhinos, particularly their calves.

“The system has the potential to control hyena intrusion in the sanctuary,” Rhino Ark said in a statement.

Once a hyena is detected, the system will activate an ultrasonic beam to deter the animal, ensuring enhanced protection for the rhino population.

Rhino Ark expressed gratitude to David Salzgeber, CEO of IT-Revolutions, and his team for developing and donating the $65,000 system. The organization also acknowledged the support of Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in the installation process.

Beyond hyena detection, a network of sensors has also been installed to provide real-time monitoring of key sanctuary features, including fence voltage and river water levels.

The AI system marks a significant step in leveraging technology to bolster wildlife conservation and habitat protection in Kenya.
