NAIROBI, Kenya, April 24 – The World Health Organization (WHO) is set to launch a pilot study in Kenya on skin-neglected tropical diseases using a mobile app called Artificial Intelligence.
In a statement, WHO stated it is collaborating with the University of Catalunya, Spain, and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) to launch the study.
WHO stated that the NTD AI innovation will enable healthcare professionals in Kenya to identify skin-related conditions.
“WHO in collaboration with the University of Catalunya, Spain, and KEMRI_Kenya, is launching a pilot study on skin NTDs mobile app Artificial Intelligence,” WHO Kenya stated on X.
Some of these NTDs include leprosy, Buruli ulcer, yaws, cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, chromoblastomycosis and mycetoma, and ectoparasites, including scabies and tungiasis.
WHO has stated that the innovation will further empower the early detection, prevention, and treatment of conditions.
WHO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is currently having a workshop with county health workers on the topic of innovation.
“The skin NTDs Ai innovation will first be tested in Kenya and will assist health workers to identify skin conditions,” it stated.
“WHO tropical disease Research team, DR Joyce Onsongo, WHO-K lead for NTDs MOH_Kenya, and county health workers are at a workshop for further discussion,” it added.
