S. Korea’s number of beef cattle down in Q1

SEOUL, April 19 (Xinhua) — The number of beef cattle raised in South Korea went down in the first quarter on lower beef prices, statistical office data showed Friday.

Local farms bred 3,491,000 beef cattle in the January-March quarter, down 3.9 percent from a year earlier, according to Statistics Korea.

The number of milk cows reared in the country decreased 0.7 percent over the year to 382,000 in the first quarter, while the figure for pigs slipped 1.1 percent to 10,994,000.

The readings for layer and broiler chickens increased in single digits to 76,033,000 and 93,822,000 respectively, while the number of ducks jumped 25.4 percent to 6,049,000 in the first quarter.
