NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 28 – The government has reiterated plans to enhance investment in the information, communication, and technology sector to further accelerate the country’s development.
Speaking after commissioning the data annotation solutions provider Sama Kenya EPZ Delivery Centre in Nairobi, President William Ruto said that his administration’s aim is to turn Kenya into a skills-based economy.
Ruto, who was accompanied by visiting Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, added that the state targets setting up more than 1,400 ICT hubs at both constituency and ward levels, among other projects, as part of its strategic plans to boost the sector.
“Our intentional investment in ICT infrastructure will ensure that we turn Kenya into a skills-based economy. With the Government’s bias on new and specialized domains, the youth will stay current with emerging industry demands, guaranteeing them income,” said Ruto.
Sama Chief Executive Officer Wendy Gonzalez affirmed that Kenya has the potential to become a major player in the global business process outsourcing (BPO) and AI value chain markets.
She added that plans to enhance Sama (BPO) investments in the East and Horn of Africa region will further position the region as an artificial intelligence (AI) value chain investment hub.
“We are excited to be a part of this growth. For over a decade, we have provided individuals who are most likely to be excluded from formal sector jobs with quality work and skills transfer opportunities,” added Gonzalez.
