Airtel eyes Africa’s fibre connectivity market with new entity

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 12 – Airtel Africa has set up Africa Telesonic Limited, a fibre company, to manage its fibre-optic assets in Africa.

Airtel Africa CEO Segun Ogunsanya said that the new entity will address the continent’s growing need for wholesale data by providing full terrestrial fibre and submarine cable solutions.

“Without a question, Africa is experiencing a digital revolution, with increased demand for data across all industries, particularly among the continent’s rising youth population,” said Ogunsanya CEO Airtel Africa.

The Telesonic, with over 75,000 kilometers of terrestrial fibre, will operate in all 14 markets of Airtel Africa’s and will boost national economies.

The established company will also enhance connectivity in key sectors, including education and healthcare, as well as promote improved access and efficiency.

“Our investment represents not onlyadvancement in technology , but also a catalyst for change, bringing people and ideas together across borders,” stated Ogunsanya.

“The establishment of Airtel Africa Telesonic Limited underscores Airtel Africa’s commitment to addressing Africa’s digital revolution needs by providing cutting-edge fibre-optic solutions that will empower businesses, education, healthcare, and communities at large,” he added.

Telesonic now joins the list of companies competing in the fibre sector, focusing on African markets, including MTN Group, Vodacom Group, Bayobab, and Cassava Technologies-owned Liquid.
