Unilever taps into seasoning herbs and spices

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 24 – Unilever has unveiled its range of seasonings as demand for the products grows.

Under the brand name ‘Royco’, they include pilau masala, curry & spice, ginger, garlic, turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, and paprika.

The company also launched two new variants, the wet and dry fry spices and the nyama choma spices that are locally packed at Njoro Canning.

“Our commitment to creating unforgettable culinary experiences has led us to craft the Royco Spices collection,” said John Kibira, Unilever Kenya Head of Nutrition.

“Each of our eleven Royco Spices variants embodies the richness of local & global flavors and traditions. From the zest of ginger flavour to the depth of paprika, we’ve left no stone unturned in curating a diverse and exceptional range.”

The newly introduced Royco Spices are in line with Unilever’s sustainability agenda on localization, which focuses on working with local suppliers.

The company has partnered with Njoro Canning, roping in local farmers from sustainable sources.

“The Royco Spices are premium seasoning spices because of the high standard of sustainable and quality sourcing. As a leading business, Unilever has a requirement to steam-treat all spices we manufacture and sell, which is a higher standard than local benchmark,” said Luck Ochieng, Unilever Kenya Managing Director.

“Royco is the market leader in the two segments and has been a household name in Kenya for five decades, transforming dishes and flavoring food across the region.”

Royco premium natural spices with no additives will range from Sh10 to Sh450.

Recent research by the Kantar World Panel shows that 6 out of 10 homes in Kenya use Royco Mchuzi and Royco Cube.
