NAIROBI, Kenya, April 19 – The CIC Group has begun a training program that targets cooperative societies in the country.
The insurance group will train at least 5,000 leaders from more than 3,000 societies countrywide.
The training is centered on strategic management with the aim of strengthening them.
“The Group is giving back by organizing learning opportunities to ensure that the leaders are successful in running their societies,” said Patrick Nyaga, CIC Group Chief Executive Officer.
“The company is embarking on the training program to ensure that the leaders positively influence the various cooperative institutions they serve,” Nyaga said.
“This way, the members can benefit from the visionary leadership and work together to build strong entities that will contribute to the growth of our economy.”
In addition to training, the group is also planning to train county cooperative officers in the coming months.
Kenya is one of the countries with the strongest cooperative movements on the continent.
It is estimated that the sector contributes between 43 percent and 45 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
The Cooperative Alliance of Kenya (CAK), which is the national apex organization for Kenya’s Co-operative Movement, estimates that 550,000 individuals are employed in the sector.
The umbrella body has at least 14,000 registered member cooperatives, with individual members in them totaling over 10 million, with mobilized savings of over Sh250 billion, or 30 percent of national savings.
