More than forty percent of Kenyans living in Nairobi’s low-income areas have lost their jobs – Survey

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 30 – More than forty percent of Kenyans living in Nairobi’s low-income areas have witnessed a complete loss of income due to job loss since Kenya reported its first coronavirus case in Mid-March.

The survey by Tifa Research indicates that 43 percent of Kenyans lost their income, while 69 percent have had a reduction in earnings.

The research, which uses a sample size of 579 respondents, finds that 61 percent of Kenyans who reported reduced earnings due to the pandemic have resolved to slash their expenditure on food and drinks than any other type of purchases or payments.

Respondents of the survey also sharply curtailed spending on rent, clothing, entertainment and transportation.

Ways One’s Daily Life Has Changed Since the Outbreak of the Virus

Commenting on the findings, Tifa Research CEO Maggie Ireri says that hunger is the foreseeable challenge anticipated if the virus and lock-down continue.

Ireri adds that such problems could lead to increased crime in Nairobi, among other challenges.
