KISUMU, Kenya, Oct 26 – MoneyGram International has partnered with Diamond Trust Bank to roll-out a traffic awareness campaign targeting boda boda operators in major towns in the country.
Speaking to over 300 boda boda operators in Kisumu during the launch of the campaign, Assistant General Manager, Money Transfer Services of Diamond Trust Bank, Stella Nduku Mulandi, said “all accidents are preventable if an effective safety management system is in place and enforced.”
Mulandi further called on the operators to save and take advantage of financial assistance and services being extended by the bank and MoneyGram International.
Regional Director for MoneyGram International, South East Africa, Anton Luttig, added; “We have contributed to instilling the basics of road safety in our boda boda operators. We also believe that participants have learnt the need to manage their finances through savings, safe money transfers and investing wisely.”
The campaign will be rolled out in Kisumu followed by Eldoret and Kitale.
There have been numerous fatal road accidents involving boda boda operators who rarely observe traffic rules as they lack training. Scores have died and many others have been maimed with medical bills running into millions of shillings.
The initiative aims to assist in minimising these incidents, as well as contribute towards the social and economic development in these towns.
Area traffic police boss Akare Gababa emphasised the importance of the penal actions to ensure law enforcement. “The police will not show leniency towards any violation that has an impact on the personal safety of violators and the safety of other road users,” he said.
