Vipingo Ridge: A coastal golfing destination

Clubhouse

(Victor Okwaro) – There are obvious things that come to mind when you think of Mombasa, including beaches, palm trees, sand and ocean. Get ready to have your perception of the coast changed forever when you visit the breathtaking 5 star private residential golfing destination Vipingo Ridge.

Vipingo Ridge is located approximately 20 minutes drive past Mtwapa in the Vipingo area on the way to Kilifi. It’s surrounded by massive sisal plantations. You can’t miss the large ‘Vipingo Ridge’ sign on the left, and its less than a minutes drive from the main road. As you reach the towering gates with a high number of security personnel that could give the Department of Defence a run for their money – you realize this is no ordinary development.

Vipingo Ridge sits on an expansive 2,500 acre residential estate, with luxury homes and two 18 hole championship golf courses. It’s a sight to behold. The long 5 minute drive to the Club house is lined by luxury Mediterranean styled homes. Each holiday home is built on a quarter acre or more, with green lawns and very well planned in-roads. The homes have no fences or security gates, giving you the impression you are in a first world luxury development inEurope.

The club house is a wonderful structure that keeps with the Mediterranean styled theme, with an extremely high entrance and walls that seems to go on forever. The old architecture of the building mixes well with the contemporary African inspired furniture in the large and welcoming lobby area, with the sun’s rays coming through the centre of the building.

There is a choice of dining areas, all of which give an excellent view of the golf course. The 2nd floor is open with no roof, with a large bar area and comfortable couches that would be perfect for watching the sun go down as you sip on your favourite drink and marvel at the view of the ocean in the far distance.

The world class golf courses at Vipingo Ridge are breathtaking and very well designed, and even if you’re not a golfer, you’d be tempted to take it up just to walk on the manicured grass that seems almost unreal.

We visited on Easter Sunday, and they were serving a delicious brunch that included barbecued seafood, roast goat, and a wide variety of salads and side dishes. On a regularl day one can order from the a la carte menu, and the prices of food and drinks are not overly expensive.

Whether you’re a serious buyer who wants to own a home on a world class gold development, an avid golfer, or just someone who is curious, make sure you visit Vipingo Ridge the next time you’re in the coast. It’s an experience that you won’t soon forget.
