PERFORMANCE BONUSES

  • Submission of the Night: Rashid Mlegelo
  • Fight of the Night: Kevin Odongo vs Romain Kasase

The night began in difficult fashion for the home fans as Uganda’s Justin Okot spoiled the party by finishing Kenya’s Leslie Masiga in the opening bout. Uganda doubled its success moments later when Lawrence Mukiibi submitted South Sudan’s Abednego Thon to put the Ugandan contingent 2-0 on the night.

Zambia’s Batista Mende continued the trend of early finishes, securing another stoppage victory and setting the tone for what would become a historic evening of fights.

One of the night’s most highly anticipated matchups saw Nairobi Jiu-Jitsu Academy standout Alhassan Mosala make his professional MMA debut against Kenya’s Julius Osodo. Mosala showcased composure beyond his experience, weathering a competitive opening round before securing a second-round ground-and-pound TKO victory that announced his arrival on the professional scene in emphatic fashion.

One of Kenya’s most respected figures in MMA Brian Munyi of Chanuka Self Defence, who also serves as the MMA Commissioner of the Kenya Oriental Combat Sports Federation, impressed with his fight against Uganda’s Henry Kirangwa, delivering a win and a tactful masterclass in mature mixed martial arts. After repeatedly taking his opponent to the mat and controlling the action throughout the contest, Munyi capitalized when Kirangwa rushed forward against the cage. It was here that Brian executed a beautiful throw before unleashing a devastating finishing sequence that earned him a spectacular TKO victory. The highlight-reel finish by Brian Munyi was later awarded the ANZA MMA Knockout of the Night bonus, sending the crowd into celebration.

The heavyweight clash between Kenya’s Kevin Odongo and DR Congo’s 118-kilogram powerhouse Romain Kasase proved to be one of the most dramatic fights in ANZA MMA history. Kasase started aggressively, storming forward with a barrage of punches that visibly shook Odongo in the opening moments. Odongo, however, demonstrated tremendous composure under pressure, regaining control of the center of the cage and responding with vicious combinations, including several powerful overhand right hands that rattled his Congolese opponent. The second round became a more technical affair as Kasase attempted to utilize his judo background to secure takedowns, but Odongo’s defense held firm as he gradually began outstriking the larger man. Kasase eventually secured a takedown and advanced to full mount midway through the round, appearing to be on the verge of victory. What followed was a remarkable display of heart and determination from Odongo. Escaping from the dominant position, he reversed the situation, took Kasase’s back and unleashed a relentless barrage of punches that forced the referee to intervene.

The dramatic comeback victory brought the crowd to its feet, with one of Africa’s biggest music stars, Bien, entering the cage afterward to congratulate the victorious Kenyan heavyweight. The contest was later awarded Fight of the Night, recognizing one of the most thrilling battles ever witnessed inside the ANZA MMA cage.

With the atmosphere reaching fever pitch, Tanzania’s Rashid Mlegelo and Zambia’s Chilufya entered the cage following heated exchanges during ANZA MMA Pro Night 002’s press conference. The two featherweights delivered a high-paced and highly technical battle, exchanging positions on both the feet and the ground. Mlegelo ultimately secured back control before finishing the fight with a perfectly executed rear-naked choke submission. The performance earned Mlegelo the Submission of the Night award and further established the Tanzanian standout as one of the region’s most dangerous featherweights.

The co-main event featured Kenyan star George “The Maverick” Itumo against DR Congo’s Ken Boton of Elite Training Center in Lubumbashi. The bout showcased high-level mixed martial arts from both athletes, with Boton finding success early with accurate striking while Itumo answered with excellent movement and well-timed takedowns. Boton’s cage defense was impressive throughout the contest, repeatedly working his way back to his feet after being taken down. However, Itumo’s pressure steadily increased as the fight progressed. The Kenyan mixed body shots with effective grappling, secured multiple takedowns, and gradually broke down his opponent’s resistance.

With less than a minute remaining, Itumo unleashed a finishing barrage against the cage, earning a TKO victory and further strengthening his reputation as one of East Africa’s brightest MMA talents.

The main event belonged to Kenyan fan favourite Ouhsummer Ali Abad a.k.a ‘Ninja Turtle’, who faced South Sudan’s Peter Busak in a highly anticipated featherweight showdown. The fight immediately delivered on expectations, with both athletes engaging in intense exchanges before transitioning into a series of fast-paced grappling scrambles. Busak showcased significant development in his all-around MMA game and briefly gained top position over the Kenyan star. Ali Abad’s elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu credentials ultimately proved decisive. The BJJ brown belt expertly swept his opponent, inflicting damaging strikes and transitioning seamlessly into a shotgun armbar. With Busak’s elbow hyperextended, the referee was forced to intervene, handing Ali Abad a spectacular submission victory and sending the packed venue into celebration.
