NAIROBI, Kenya, May 27 — The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Chairperson Anne Makori says an investigation team has been dispatched to Migori to probe the shooting and killing of six people by police during a protest against insecurity.
She quoted IPOA Act Section 25 (1) which mandates “the Authority to investigate any death or serious injury including death or serious injury while in Police custody, which is the result of Police action or were caused by members of the Service while on duty.”
“Upon conclusion of its investigations, the Authority shall take appropriate action including recommending to the Director of Public Prosecutions the prosecution of any person found culpable,” Makori said in a statement.
The incident occurred on Thursday when residents marched to Isebania Police Station in Kuria West Sub-County to march on the killing of a local businessman Moses Mwangi.
The group carried Mwangi’s body prompting a fierce clash where one person was shot and killed, police said.
Two police vehicles and 15 police officers were injured in the chaos which took place between Thursday and Friday.
Kuria West police boss Cleti Kimayio claimed his officers were forced to act after a group mainly consisting of mourners had attempted to torch Isebania Police Station, Migori County.
The deceased businessman in the area was murdered by robbers about a week ago.
