UDA lawmaker Karen Nyamu stirs debate over disgraceful conduct abroad

Those who castigated Nyamu however raised concern over the breach of Constitutional provisions on leadership and integrity, specifically Article 75 (1).

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 17 — By now you have probably come across the video of Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu (UDA) stirring a commotion at a concert in Dubai headlined by his lover, Mugithi star Samidoh, alongside other artistes.

In the video, Nyamu and Edday Nderitu, Samidoh’s current wife, almost traded blows when the controversial senator went straight to where Samidoh was seating and sat on his lap.

Edday rose from her seat and tried to reach for her husband’s hand during the ensuing melee as security guards tried to separate them.

In another video, Nyamu is seen dancing on stage alongside Samidoh and another singer before she is ejected from the stage.

The now-viral videos have elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans, with some describing Nyamu’s behavior as disgraceful for a person holding public office.

Others have defended Nyamu’s conduct, arguing that she has a right to fight for her space having birthed two children with Samidoh who is also a police officer.

Those who castigated Nyamu however raised concern over the breach of Constitutional provisions on leadership and integrity, specifically Article 75 (1).

Article 75 (1) (c):

A State officer shall behave, whether in public and official life, in private life, or in association with other persons, in a manner that avoids– (c) demeaning the office the officer holds.

Constitution of Kenya (2010).

The Constitution further stipulates disciplinary measure which include dismissal or removal from office.

Article 75 (2):

A person who contravenes clause (1), or Article 76, 77 or 78 (2)–

(a) shall be subject to the applicable disciplinary procedure for the relevant office; and
(b) may, in accordance with the disciplinary procedure referred to in paragraph (a), be dismissed or otherwise removed from office.
