Glass recycling; Kitengela Hot Glass creates beauty from the broken and forgotten

Handmade. Recycled. Made in Kenya.

Kitengela Hot Glass might have hit the jackpot when it comes to the perfect trifecta.

Their studio in Rongai a few kilometers off Magadi Road, is home to an expansive facility. With the first workshop being erected in 1990 by founder Croze Anselm, the team has grown to 45 staff members creating special items that compliment any home.

Recycling has not completely been integrated within Kenyan society. A practice common place in Europe and the Americas, recycling has long being lauded for its preservation of the environment. With global warming a growing concern and more aware of the part their daily choices have on the environment there is need to be vigilant in making environmentally conscious decisions.

Kitengela Hot Glass makes beautiful glass blown items. Where everything is unique and nothing is wasted, their take of recycling brings forth something truly special. According to research, glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without loss in quality or purity. They take on broken glass from various sources, sort them and go on to melt them down before they make for the perfect raw material for glass blowing.

Melting 450kg of old glass a day, their work has converted over 2500 tonnes (2,500,000 kilos)
of scrap window and bottle glass into useful and decorative items over the years.
