A little context to sharpen your red-carpet critiques: as always, the 2026 Met Gala served as the primary fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, and the opening note of this year’s spring exhibition, Costume Art. Curated by Andrew Bolton, the show centres its focus on the role of the dressed body in the museum’s millennia-deep collection, placing paintings, sculptures and objects in dialogue with historical and contemporary garments from the Costume Institute.
