Oscars 2016 nominees revealed, Star Wars nominated for five

Oscar nominations

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ has been nominated for five Academy Awards.

While the latest installment in the franchise failed to be recognise in any of the acting categories, it still managed to garner an impressive number of nominations for the ceremony next month.

The movie has been nominated for Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

This is the latest good news for the film after it previously became the fastest film to earn $1 billion at the box office.

The hit sci-fi film – which raked in an estimated $517 million on its opening weekend – rocketed to the staggering amount in just 12 days.

Meanwhile, ‘The Revenant’ leads the way with 12 Academy Award nominations.

The semi-biographical western film set in 1823 and inspired by the experiences of frontiersman and fur trapper Hugh Glass will compete in a number of categories at the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on February 28, 2016.

Star Leonardo DiCaprio will vie for Best Actor, Alejandro G Inarritu is up for Best Director, Tom Hardy has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor and the movie will compete for Best Picture.

Other nominations include Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Make-up and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Cinematography.

‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ is second with an impressive 10 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for George Miller, although its cast missed out on acting nods.

And ‘The Martian’ has seven nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for its star Matt Damon.
