Rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight will have to remain behind bars until next month after a California judge on Monday delayed a bail hearing over a hit-and-run incident that left one man dead and one injured.
The 49-year-old is charged with murder and attempted murder and could face life in prison if convicted over the hit-and-run last month. He has denied all charges against him.
Prosecutor Cynthia Barnes said she has a “very large stack of uncharged crimes that I will be presenting with regard to bail” for Knight, whose bail hearing was postponed to March 20.
Knight’s initial $2 million bail was revoked because he was deemed a flight risk and could intimidate witnesses, prosecutors said.
Knight, who was taken to the hospital following a court appearance last week after complaining of chest pains, walked into and out of court unaided in downtown Los Angeles on Monday.
His lawyer David Kenner asked LA Superior Court Judge Ricardo Ocampo to let Knight’s personal physician to see him in jail. The judge denied the request.
Speaking outside the court afterwards, Kenner said the medical care Knight had received in custody was “inappropriate.”
Witnesses said that Knight got into an argument before allegedly using a red pick-up truck to strike two men — backing into one, and then running over both men.
The apparent argument began on the set of “Straight Outta Compton,” a movie about pioneering rap group NWA. Knight was arrested after being interviewed by homicide detectives within hours of the incident.
One of the victims, 55-year-old actor Terry Carter, was declared dead at the hospital. The second man, 51-year-old Cle Sloan, survived but no details on his condition were released.
Knight co-founded Death Row Records along with hip-hop music king Dr. Dre in the early 1990s.
The label launched stars such as Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur but collapsed in 1996 when Knight was jailed for violating a probation order by beating up a rival in Las Vegas.
He again served a 10-month jail stint in 2003 after getting into a fight outside a Hollywood nightclub. Last year, he was shot six times at a music awards party.
