A peek into Blackbird’s new collection

The new collection from Blackbird fits in line with the climate in the world of African fashion, which seems to be boasting an incessantly favorable forecast. As the landscape expands, it’s only fitting that the team behind this burgeoning label secure their position in the growing list of industry nomads. They have managed to rely on their acute futuristic sensibilities to produce a brand that will put them on the verge of changing the scope of men’s fashion indefinitely.

Established in 2008, founders, Zedekiah Lukoe and Sydney Owino, who are of Kenyan descent, initially introduced their label as Blackbird Jeans. Their vividly structured denim line helped solidify their natural aesthetic and creative prowess, which, despite their African heritage, allowed them the freedom to be competitively adaptable.

The success of Blackbird Jeans paved the way for another opportunity to initiate a more luxurious and ambitiously sophisticated brand that incorporates all the elements necessary for global marketability. Their impressive showing during Africa Fashion Week New York in 2011 also inspired this strategic shift and highlighted their vividly stylized menswear collection. They effectively paraded their vibrantly energetic hues encased in architecturally constructed suits and secularly functional pieces. They also exaggerated their now signature template which includes the Maasai check blazers and drop crotch trousers.

This significant exposure gave birth to Blackbird Fashion and Jeans Company, a luxury infused fashion house that is comprised of high-end clothing, leather goods and accessories, all etched with their stamp of unique persuasions and functional chic. This new collection pays homage to the period when the “gangster” lifestyle was in full effect, when sleek suits and shiny shoes were a sign of wealth and power. Richly illuminated fabrics, intricately defined silhouettes and a refreshingly bold color scheme evoke images from the funky twisted 70’s and the excessively flashy 80’s. They also recall our favorite characters from classic films such as The Godfather and Goodfellas.

Zeddie and Sidney have invented their own particular brand of distilled charm that contains a heavy dose of tribal sophistication mixed in with stylish functionality with that zing of exuberant edginess. Armed with their statement making pieces and decadent tendencies, the Blackbird label is poised to usher in a new era that accommodates the modern male’s high-octane lifestyle. Whether it’s a schedule filled with business meetings or an evening engagement, Blackbird Fashion and Jeans Company will be the clinical staple for fashion-obsessed blokes whose taste buds require a more customized menu.
