Fish is considered to be one of the healthiest foods in the world. According to the American Heart Association, eating fish at least twice a week is the gateway to a healthy diet. Fish is filled with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins such as D and B2 (riboflavin) among many other nutrients.

Over the years, fish which was predominantly known as a delicacy of the people from Nyanza, has grown in leaps and bounds that it has now become a delicacy found on many dinner tables amongst many communities across Kenya. Fish is also today one of the most consumed meals at various restaurants and eating joints.

One business that has become a household name in Nairobi, is Big Fish, or as many call it, Osumo. With two established branches (on Garden Estate Rd off Thika Superhighway, and on Church Rd, Westlands- both operate daily Monday to Monday). Today, Big Fish has become the go to place for Fish- that mouth watering, delicious meal. (We visited the Westlands branch).

Bradox Osumo, a humble, cheerful, soft spoken and hardworking graduate from Kenyatta University with a degree in Biochemistry and the face of the restaurant brand, runs the business alongside his sister Maureen Adhiambo who came up with the name Big Fish “as a place where she could sell big fish at an affordable price.” Maureen who is a trained teacher by profession, used to sell fish but on a small scale as a side business by the roadside in Nairobi’s Roosters estate. Osumo who was at the time jobless, decided to help in running the business to keep himself occupied. That was in the year 2016.

Today, with two outlets in the city, Big Fish employs over 40 staff and has plans to expand to Ngong Road and Mombasa Road. It is also one of the most active brands on social media of this nature, with various posts almost per hour, on a daily of people posting pictures of their delicacies every time they visit any of two Big Fish outlets. Interestingly enough, it was this post on twitter that went viral, popularizing his business. “Coming back, I was astonished to find that it had blown up in proportion with comments of orders.” Today there is running joke that Osumo made girls on twitter and facebook love fish.
