First test-tube penguin born

Test Tube Penguins

The world’s first test-tube penguin has been born in San Diego.

The chick, who has been named 184, hatched at the SeaWorld theme park in the Californian city 12 weeks ago and is the first ever penguin to be born through artificial insemination.

According to Dr. Justine O’Brien, the Scientific Director at the park, the baby Magellanic penguin will help researchers at the reproductive centre learn more about their reproductive biology and monitor the species’ population, reports the Metro newspaper.

She explained: “The goal of our research centre is to study a species’ reproductive biology, to learn as much as we can about that and use this to not only monitor the health of not only our zoological populations but wild populations as well.”
