MakaPads: Local technology makes papyrus sanitary pads affordable

”This is the best absorbent I have ever known,” Dr. Moses Musaazi’s explains as he holds a newly formed sanitary pad absorbent made from papyrus.

Part of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) program to provide locally made MakaPads to women and girls throughout refugee camps in Uganda, Dr. Moses Musaazi’s uses local technology to uplift the community from poverty.

“Many girls were not going to school because they could not afford sanitary pads which were imported and very expensive.”

Dr. Moses Musaazi’s innovation — focusing on local, sustainable and affordable solutions — is dramatically improving girls’ access to education in Uganda.
