Weird World: Whisky Keeps Skin Healthy

Whisky can keep the skin healthy.

New research has revealed that the ingredients of the Scottish tipple can be used in skincare products to boost the appearance of the skin.

The study by Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Aberdeen has revealed that pot ale – the residue from the whisky-making process used for animal feed – provides antioxidant benefits in skincare.

It is able to reduce inflammation and puffiness and calms the redness on the skin.

The scientists think it is the first time that whisky by-products have been used to investigate the antioxidant capacity of cells.

The Inverness natural skincare company Zara and Cruz was involved in the study and now uses the ingredient in its products.

Carlos Fernandez, a senior lecturer at the university and main investigator on the project, said: “The RGU team has developed a great partnership with Zara and Cruz and this is reflected by two successful research projects investigating the antioxidant effect of pot ale from whisky for health care products.”
