Sex is tons of fun, but there are many bumps and bruises along the road- quite literally. Sex injuries happen much more often than you think- so you should be aware of the most common ones.
Here are the most common sex injuries and how they can be avoided.
Vaginal/ Anal tears
Though these tears are painful, in most cases they heal pretty quickly and on their own. But if a day or two passes and the pain and bleeding does not go away, and you have trouble peeing or pus formation in the area, then see a doctor asap! The reason tearing happens is that the vagina is dry and anals aren’t self-lubricating and thus need a lube if you’re engaging in anal sex.
Sexologists also recommend peeing before having sex and taking a warm bath to relax the muscles as a way to avoid major tears.
Penis Fracture
A penis can’t exactly be fractured, since it doesn’t contain bones. Penile fracture is a rare sex injury that happens when an erect penis is bent forcefully, which breaks the blood-filled chambers inside. There’s usually a snapping sound when this happens, followed by excruciating pain, a bruised penis, and swelling. Doctors say that this injury exclusively occurs during super-rough sex and happens mostly when the woman is on top if there is resistance at the point of entry, the woman’s weight can push down on an erect penis.
However, this doesn’t mean you should resort to vanilla basic sex for the rest of your life, instead just be mindful. A penis fracture is always a medical emergency and requires surgery to correct it.
Muscle Cramps
Sex is a physical calorie-burning activity that can definitely lead to muscle cramps. The body parts that mostly cramp during sex are the legs and thighs, and twisting your body too hard can pull muscles in your belly or your back. Any pain should let up in a day or two, maybe take a painkiller and rest. See a doctor if the pain feels, unlike anything you have experienced before. An easy fix is to take your time with the buildup so that your body doesn’t have to remain in one position which leads to cramps.
Scrapes and Bruises
The friction of rubbing against a rough surface say a rug, floor, or wall can cause scrapes on the bum, thighs, knees, elbow, hands, and even face. Bruises from hickies and spanking tend to be on the milder end of the sex injury spectrum. Friction burns can be very painful. To avoid scrapes, put a blanket down as a buffer if you plan to get busy on the floor. Most scrapes and bruises aren’t serious and they’ll heal on their own in a few days but if you see signs of infection (swelling or pus) you may want to see a doctor.
Most injuries come as a surprise but it’s best to be aware of exactly what can go wrong, so you know how to deal with it if/when it does.
