The Moon Houses Magic: Exploring Lamu from a Seaside Haven

Kenya’s oldest continuously inhabited town and one of the original Swahili settlements founded in 1370 is simply unlike any other place. Unique doesn’t even begin to describe it.

From landing at Manda Airport and being whisked away on a wooden dhow, greeted by the sight of children leaping off a ledge into the ocean like swift fish – all against a backdrop of a coastline dotted with hotels and luxury beachfront homes. That’s just the beginning of the magic that awaits in Lamu.

We sail closer and closer to our home away from home, Moon Houses – a collection of interconnected houses set close to the seafront in Shela village. These are privately owned boutique guesthouses built in traditional Swahili style and furnished with antiques.

The Moonhouses team welcomes you with genuine warmth, they’re super friendly and always ready to help, with smiles that make you feel welcome. Chef Jefwa is a star chef, cooking up delicious local dishes made with the freshest seafood catches. You gotta try the seafood platter, it’s a real treat!

They help you plan awesome activities! So you can explore hidden spots, soak up the local culture, and have unforgettable adventures, all planned out for you.

Other activities kept us busy in Lamu: visits to the Lamu Fort Museum and Donkey Sanctuary, and a final stop at the floating bar and restaurant on our way back.
