What have students been up to during the lecturers strike?

Life at University is exciting and challenging at the same time and more so in public Universities. On Wednesday last week, University dons decided to down their tools. We have been monitoring the developments and what comrades have been up to during the strike.

Most students at the University of Nairobi were very happy with the strike. In fact rumour has it that most students were highly psyched for the strike to go on. So what exactly happened? Early Wednesday, some students woke up to help lecturers strike and made enough noise to attract the attention of the media. By the end of the day, most of the students who helped in the strike were so happy that it had happened. The day ended with no one knowing when exactly learning was going to resume.

On Thursday, most students were seen drinking in town and ‘window shopping.’ Of course alcohol brought about immature behaviour. It was reported that some first years that are not used to alcohol consumption could not find their way to campus and so had to be directed by the older comrades at a fee.

On Friday, things on campus were not normal as it was an extension of the Thursday drinking. Many scantly dressed women were seen hovering around the men’s hostels. No one knew what exactly was happening in those hostels. However, a close source informed us that most students resorted to hosting house parties instead of going to drink in town. By Saturday, no much activity was happening as most students had drunk and those who go to church were seen preaching around campus.

By Monday, the strike had done enough damage to the students’ pockets. The week started without much psyche as most students were quite broke. A close investigation revealed that most of the students who stay in hostels survive only on HELB and could no longer find it easy to survive. Most of their girlfriends had moved in and the usual diet is Sukuma wiki and ugali, which is the most affordable meal. The number of students who drink had reduced drastically and most of them had decided to either stay indoors or play computer games.

However, one distinct thing seen on State house road on your way to the hostels are open and used condoms thrown everywhere, and the condom dispensers are empty. Considering the workers are on strike and there is no one to fill the condom dispensers, we hope we don’t have an increase in population in nine months time. The guys at the tuck-shop have also reported that they have sold a lot of them and have to keep ordering for more deliveries.

With regards to politics, it has given campaigners more time to walk around and ask for votes. Some politicians have been seen distributing the cheapest alcohol and getting comrades drunk. SONU politics have changed in such a way that the only way to convince students that you will serve them is by purchasing enough alcohol for them. This is what the politicians are banking on.

On Tuesday, nearly a week after the strike started, most Universities had closed down as they were not sure when the strike will be over. Comrades at the University of Nairobi waited eagerly to be told to go home but not communication was coming from the administration.
