VIDEO: Here are the 3 must watch movies at Nairobi Film Festival

The 2018 edition of the Nairobi Film Festival is set to serve up some great films.

The festival that began last year in 2017 was created by film producer Mbithi Masya and Sheba Hirst. The duo teamed up to re-ignite the film culture in Kenya and highlight various Kenyan produced films. With more Africans sharing African stories, the curated as part of the film festival bring to life a vibrant, vivid Africa which is essential to the portrayal of Africa to the world.

This year the festivities set to end on the 1st of April, feature a lineup of films that  include horror, sci-fi and even romantic comedy.

Here are the Capital Campus top picks to watch during this film week:

3. I Am Not A Witch

This film directed by Zambian-born Welsh director Rungano Nyoni, centers around the life of a little girl named Shula. After she appears in a rural homestead unannounced, 9-year-old Shula is subjected to a witch trial and sent to a witch camp, catering to the wild requests of the camp director and tourists. The movie has received mixed reviews, nonetheless, the director’s approach to the mystery surrounding witches is comical and spellbinding.

This is a Kenyan-produced film, directed by the renowned Likarion Wainaina. The movie tells the tale of a young girl whose dream of becoming a superhero is threatened by terminal illness. According to an interview with Variety, Rushlake’s Philipp Hoffmann said, “It’s all at once a film with a strong female lead, a superhero film, a comedy about grief and dying, and a film about community and people coming together.” An interesting take on sci-fi, the lead Stycie Waweru wows in a movie which in its essence applauds dreamers.

1.Disconnect

David “Tosh” Gitonga is back. The brains behind Nairobi Half Life returns after a long hiatus. Showcasing his versatility, Gitonga offers up a romantic comedy dubbed “Disconnect.” The movie about the complexities of dating is a raw yet entertaining take on the difficulties of the single life in Nairobi. The gorgeous cast includes Nick Mutuma, Brenda Wairimu, Catherine Kamau, Pascal Tokodi, Bridgette Shigadi, Pierre Makena and Patricia Kihoro.
