UK student makes Sh1.9M from sweets, school suspends him

Tommie Rose

A Uk student made 14,000 pounds (Sh1.9 million) from the sale of sweets and junk food to schoolmates. Tommie Rose high-profit margin landed the young entrepreneur in trouble with the school administration which suspended him for running a black-market syndicate. According to reports by Huffington Post,  Tommie, a student at Buile Hill High School in Salford, Manchester, was saving up the money to pay for his tuition fees. His business was so successful he even employed two friends to help run it, paying them £5.50 a day.

The student attracted the attention of Dragon Den contributors, Duncan Bannatyne and Theo Paphitis, who congratulated the young man via twitter with Duncan stating, “I did the same thing aged 14-16, good on him.”

Tommie’s father stated,”He’s a typical teenage boy who saw what he wanted and worked hard for it. He realized that if you want to get ahead in business and in life, you have to start at a young age.”

When asked what the money was for, Tommie mentioned that the money was for his college education. The fact that the school suspended the determined student enraged many within the community. In their defense, Tommie’s current school released this statement, “We admire this pupil’s entrepreneurship, but school is not the place to set-up a black market of fizzy drinks, sweets and chocolates. We have extremely high standards and with our healthy eating policy we don’t allow isotonic drinks, fizzy drinks and large amounts of sweets for the good of our children.”

Tommie has set up a trust fund with profits from his earnings and intends to pay for a business degree in an elite university.
