Ugandan Superstar Jose Chameleone Celebrates 25 Years In The Music Industry

Ugandan music legend Jose Chameleone recently celebrated 25 years in the music industry with his spectacular “Legend in Gold” concert at the Kampala Serena Hotel.

The sold-out event saw the father of five, dressed in a golden robe, take the stage all night long, delivering a performance filled with both nostalgia and fresh energy. Chameleone is known for delivering hits in English, Swahili and Luganda.

Jose Chameleone, born Joseph Mayanja, began his career in 1996 as a DJ at the Missouri nightclub in Kampala before transitioning into music in 1998 in Kenya. He worked with the renowned Ogopa Deejays, a Kenyan record label, where he released his first single, ‘Bageya,’ featuring Kenyan artist Redsan.

One of Chameleone’s most iconic tracks, ‘Mama Mia,’ also produced by Ogopa Deejays, holds a special place in his career and the hearts of his fans. Released in 2000, ‘Mama Mia’ was a breakthrough hit that catapulted Chameleone to stardom across East Africa. The song, which tells the story of a man pleading with his lover Njoki for forgiveness, resonated widely due to its relatable lyrics and catchy melody.

The 45-year-old’s deep connection with Kenya has also been a significant part of his career. He has also worked with other Kenyan artists including Vivian and Elani.

His debut album dropped in 2000, and by 2013, he had released 13 albums, including Kipepeo, Shida za Dunia, Valu Valu, Bayuda, Badilisha, Sweet Banana, and Champion.

The concert featured a mix of Chameleone’s early 2000s hits, along with newer tracks like ‘Kigwa Leero.’ The crowd, a blend of generations, celebrated his enduring impact on African music. A particularly moving moment was his tribute to his wife Daniella, where his son performed the classic song ‘Daniella,’ originally sung by Papa Cidy.
