Ugandan Music Star Joshua Baraka Shares His Story In New Spotify Documentary

Joshua Baraka, the Kampala-born singer-songwriter and producer, is fast rising as a global artist and a Spotify RADAR Africa star.

Known for his unique sound and relatable storytelling, Baraka is preparing to release his latest single, “Lonely,” along with a heartfelt documentary that dives into his journey, ambitions, and personal roots. This new phase marks a pivotal chapter as he steps confidently into the international music spotlight.

The upcoming documentary offers fans a rare, intimate look at Baraka’s journey, featuring emotional family moments, visits to the boxing gym that instilled discipline in him, and glimpses of the creative process behind “Lonely.” Through this lens, audiences gain deeper insights into his life, artistic process, and the foundation of values that drive his work.

Reflecting on his RADAR Africa journey, Joshua shares, “I’m really thankful to be part of the RADAR programme this year. It’s been an opportunity for me to showcase my art and let people in on my world. It feels good to be recognised by a programme that has nurtured so many artists I admire. I hope this opens doors for more Ugandan artists like myself.” His inclusion in the RADAR Africa program cements his rising influence in Africa’s music scene, elevating his sound to reach new audiences.

Since launching his career, Joshua has made impressive strides. His debut EP, Growing Pains, features collaborations with prominent artists like Bien, King Promise, and Joeboy, and his breakout hit “Nana” has already surpassed 5 million streams. His tracks have reached fans across Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with over 240,000 Spotify playlists featuring his music.

As “Lonely” ushers in Joshua’s next era, his audience continues to expand. In the last 28 days, his listeners have been predominantly young adults, with 32% aged 23-27, 25% in the Gen Z bracket of 18-24, and 24% between 28-34. His audience is slightly male-dominated, with 60% male and 37% female listeners.
