TUK fireEarlier today, images of a burning tree circulated on the interwebs and social media. Most captions alleged that The University of Nairobi students burned a tree to protest President Obama skipping a public lecture at UoN for KU.

In as much as a few voices clarified the photo is that of The Technical University of Kenya, the social media fire had spread too fast, fueled by last week’s Babu Owino’s letter to the US Embassy inviting President Obama to UoN.

It has now been confirmed TUK students burned the tree at their Haile Selasie campus.

Police have lobbed teargas to disperse a group of students from the Technical University of Kenya who were demonstrating on Haille Selasie Avenue.

The students, from the Engineering department, are demanding that the government recognises some of their core courses.

They had wanted to block Haille Selasie highway and other surrounding roads when police intervened.

There has been tension at the institution since Monday when the students accused the College management of not doing enough to push for the courses recognition after reports emerged the Engineers Board of Kenya announced that some courses are nor recognized by the Board.
